ANGER AT PLANS TO
SCRAP FREE PARKING
FREE car parking in
Bangor town centre looks set to end under a DSD
scheme aimed at regenerating the town.
Bangor´s long term parking is under review as part
of the Town Centre Masterplan, a DSD (Department for
Social Development) chief told local councillors on
Tuesday (22nd).
The DSD´s Director of Regional Planning, Ian
Snowdon, said that the plan is to generate business
and bring an end to ´a nine to five´ parking culture
in the town.
Hardest hit will be local employees who park their
cars all day while at work.
Addressing council at a special meeting of North
Down Borough Council´s Planning & Public services
Liaison Committee, he said, "One of the things we (DSD
Regional Planning Office) are doing in the town
Masterplan is addressing long term parking needs."
Referring to Queen´s Parade car park - a council
owned car park which is free - he said, "One problem
is you don’t want to drag people through a one way
system to a free car park.
"Free car parks should be on the outside of the
town. A problem you have is that people park there
from nine to five and that doesn’t benefit business
generation in the town."
